In 1945, Henk Wolvers started Dierentehuis Wolvers at Calandplein 19 in The Hague................. It housed a grooming salon, a cat and dog boarding facility, an animal shelter, a veterinarian, and a pet supplies shop. From the shelter, many dogs and cats found new homes after being examined by the resident veterinarian and neatly groomed by the groomers. The word grooming in those years meant little more than shearing an "Asbakkie", a very common breed at that time in The Hague. But of course, pedigree dogs were also groomed. Henk Wolvers did more than just groom dogs, and so he married his Gerda in 1956, who went on to work full-time at the animal facility. Gerda became the face of Wolvers and remained so until 1999. Of course, Henk and Gerda could not do all the work alone. Cousin Ron also worked full-time in the business. Ron was also an excellent qualified dog groomer. Names of employees at that time were Beppie, Gerrit, Nico, Annelies, Hugo and many others.... Gerda and Henk were not only working, and so it happened that Gerda became pregnant. Daughter Marion was born and was allowed to come to the business, her crib and playpen stood with the cats in the boarding facility. In 1974, at the age of 16, daughter Marion also started working in the family business and learned grooming from her father, who had since become an examiner for the Stichting DIBEVO, the then training institute for dog groomers. At the end of 1974, Marion passed with flying colors and was at that time one of the youngest qualified dog groomers in the Netherlands. As part of urban renewal, Dierentehuis Wolvers had to move from Calandplein. The condition was that the move had to take place within the Laakkwartier district. And so in 1978 it moved to Bresterstraat 90, a few streets away. With the move came changes. The name was changed to Hondensalon Wolvers. Due to lack of space, the shelter and dog boarding facility disappeared. In the early 1990s, Dr. de Feijter had to stop his work due to health issues, and so the practice also disappeared. In 1997, Marion took over the business and continues the family tradition. Due to intensive work and lack of time for it, the cat boarding facility/care was also stopped. All time is now devoted to the great passion, working with dogs! In 2014, a decision had to be made: renovate the current building on Bresterstraat or look for a new location. A new location was ultimately chosen because renovation was not an option. In January 2015, the step was taken. Hondensalon Wolvers left the familiar Laakkwartier after 70 years to establish itself in Voorburg.
